Today’s the day. Water fluoridation in Waterloo officially ends.
The long, drawn out debate over water fluoridation in the City of Waterloo ends today.
At noon, the region will stop fluoridating tap water in the city as well as in Elmira and part of Kitchener.
The move follows a referendum in last month’s municipal election which saw voters narrowly vote to end the 43-year-old practice.
Supporters of the decision argued fluoride was not needed in the water and posed a health risk, while some dental groups warned it would lead to an increase in cavities, especially among the poor.
